Part 4 – Matching a diesel generator to your UPS system

Maximising Protection for IT Mission-Critical Applications

Achieving optimal protection for IT mission-critical applications requires a well-matched combination of a UPS and generator. For the best results, an on-line UPS that can handle a wide range of frequency variations is highly recommended. Additionally, the generator should be appropriately sized to accommodate voltage fluctuations. To further enhance reliability, the generator can be equipped with an electronic governor, and an in-phase monitor can be integrated into the automatic transfer switch.

The Benefits of On-line UPS Technology with Generators

On-line UPS systems utilise double conversion technology, which effectively addresses frequency variations in the input power. The incoming AC power is initially converted to DC power and then transformed back to AC, ensuring a clean and regulated output. As a result, on-line UPS systems are immune to frequency variations that would otherwise trigger an off-line or line-interactive UPS to switch to battery power. This seamless operation guarantees an uninterrupted power supply to critical loads, offering maximum reliability.
